Reading Enrichment Unit: Chrysanthemum
I enjoyed delivering this unit to a second grade class at my primary site. After discussing with the SLM specialist some options for this unit, I chose Chrysanthemum, because it gave me the opportunity to teach a second grade a ELA GCCS, and allowed me the opportunity to reinforce the school’s behavior incentive plan. The unit consisted of 3 short segments, which included the hook, story time, and recall and reflection using a graphic organizer. The hook consisted of previewing three vocabulary words, discussing their meanings and pointing out that they would appear later in the book. I choose to incorporate an electronic version of the book as a web 2.0 resource. The book was read on the smart board using kindle cloud reader. This tool allowed me to highlight words and increase the font size of the text so that students could read along. I designed the graphic organizer to serve as a one stop shop for recall of who what where and how, to meet the GCCS ELACC2RL1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. The graphic organizer also served as a tool for students to connect to the story by exploring personal reflections. Students answered questions about their own name, and created drawings to represent there favorite part of the book. Finally I created a bulletin board in the media center highlighting the book as well as the classroom management behavior incentive chart. Also included on the bulletin board was a QR code to the authors website. The media specialist has reported that teachers are scanning the QR code to get more information about the book and author.
Key Assessment : Frit 8530
During the FRIT 8530 Applications of Instructional Technology course I was charged with creating a Technology Integration unit. The topic of my unit was Cyber Ethics. The unit was designed to allow students to access technology through open content websites, and prepared presentations. Students would also respond to questions and discussions by posting to the class wiki. The unit promoted inquiry because students were asked to conduct a survey and report their findings, and develop a point of view based on those findings. Technology Integration Presentation
Key Assessment: Frit 7230
In FRIT 7230 Selection and Development of Instructional Technologies, I collaborated with classmates to create a digital video that supports and promotes literacy. The digital video is a compilation of four vignettes that showcase how literature can affect student’s lives. My classmates and I had a great time storyboarding, creating the script, coaching the student actors, and filming this video. It was our goal to introduce students to several literary works, while showing the connection between the characters in the books, and the students. Digital Video
