Standard 1
Teaching for Learning
For the Teaching for Learning Standard 1, I had the opportunity through course work, practicum activities, and professional experience, to develop and collaborate on various learning activities that promote inquiry based information literacy skills. These activities were designed to aid students in critical thinking and sharing of knowledge. The lessons also integrate emerging technologies to help support differentiation for the ultimate goal of student learning and high achievement.
During my practicum activity candidate as teacher, I was given the opportunity to create a reading enrichment unit using the book Chrysanthemum for a second grade class. The unit included an introduction/hook, story time, and recall and reflection activities. I chose to use the smart board to read the eBook version to the students. By integrating the smart board into the presentation of the book, students were able to clearly see the illustrations and read along using the text that was projected on the screen. The students enjoyed this method and were very engaged. During the recall and reflection activities, I designed a work sheet that reinforced the vocabulary, allowed for written personal reflection as well as a visual arts reflection area. During the FRIT 7136 Reference and Information Sources course, I collaborated with the Loganville Christian Academy Bible teacher to design an information literacy unit to support the class assignment of creating a paper that summarized a Bible passage using various authoritative sources. The Bible teacher requested that I teach the information literacy portion of the lesson. The lesson consisted of three components, evaluating websites, outlining and note taking, and creating bibliographic and parenthetical citations from various sources. The lessons included the use of the smart board for presentation. I utilized several open source web pages for content, as well as video. Finally, a resource pathfinder was created for students to have a point of reference for several of the tools that were utilized during the lessons. During the FRIT 8530 Applications of Instructional Technology course I was charged with creating a Technology Integration unit. The topic of my unit was Cyber Ethics. The unit was designed to allow students to access technology through open content websites, and prepared presentations. Students would also respond to questions and discussions by posting to the class wiki. The unit promoted inquiry because students were asked to conduct a survey and report their findings, and develop a point of view based on those findings. Technology Integration Presentation
