Standard 2
Literacy and Reading
I have been able to exhibit proficiency for Literacy and Reading Standard 2, through course work, practicum activities, and professional experience. The artifacts highlighted include lessons, videos, and literacy programs designed to support all aspects of reading including reading for information, pleasure, and lifelong learning.
In FRIT 7230 Selection and Development of Instructional Technologies, I collaborated with classmates to create a digital video that supports and promotes literacy. The digital video is a compilation of four vignettes that showcase how literature can affect student’s lives. My classmates and I had a great time storyboarding, creating the script, coaching the student actors, and filming this video. It was our goal to introduce students to several literary works, while showing the connection between the characters in the books, and the students. Digital Video
During my work at Loganville Christian Academy as interim media specialist, I created the first upper school (6-12) reading programs, iRead for grades 6-8, and iReadtoo! for grades 9-12. This month long reading program was designed to promote reading in the post elementary grades. The program was developed as a web based program using a combination of the Yola website and the Google docs tools. Students in the middle school competed by class for the most hours logged for one month. Students in the high school competed individually for the students with the most reading ours logged. Students were rewarded bi-weekly, and at the end of the four-week period. This program proved to be a huge success during both the 2012/2013 school year. iRead iReadToo!
The practicum activity that best supports literacy is the Reading Enrichment Unit (Candidate as Teacher) This unit included an introduction/hook, story time, and recall and reflection activities. I chose to use the smart board to read the eBook version to the students. By integrating the smart board into the presentation of the book, students were able clearly see the illustrations and read along using the text that was projected on the screen. The students enjoyed this method and were very engaged. During the recall and reflection activities, I designed a work sheet that reinforced the vocabulary, allowed for written personal reflection as well as a visual arts reflection area.
